So a lot of things come to mind when I hear, see or speak this word…one of them is that scene from “Braveheart” where Mel Gibson gives the famous “Freedoooom” line. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen the full movie…but that line….haha it sticks with you!
There are so many today longing for freedom. Freedom from fear, lack, destructive behaviors, substances and vices that at first seem innocent. Yet, they can no longer break from.
As we are soon to be celebrating our Nations Independence Day I was reminded of Paul writing to the Galatians about their freedom through Jesus.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Galatians 5:1 NIV
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.”
Galatians 5:13-15 NIV
I find these verses to be such beautiful reminders of true freedom; especially in the world we live in today where many people seek the wrong kinds of freedom. Where we become so self centered we forget the freedom that comes from “loving your neighbor.”
So as we get ready to celebrate our Nations Independence…let’s keep in mind that we are stronger United rather than divided and that many times “loving your neighbor” looks like loving people who are very different from you!
